Job Description

We seek to hire a Director of Design Technology in our Virginia Beach, VA office.  At Clark Nexsen, our process advances communities through discovery and design. Ideas have the power to transform and we use them for innovative solutions to our clients’ problems. The Director of Design Technology is responsible for leading the use of design technology to achieve this vision, by proactively and strategically driving the implementation of current and emerging technologies for use in the firm's practice. This includes the planning, strategizing, training and development of (BIM) Building Information Modeling, (CAD) Computer Aided Design systems and especially their integration with computation and visualization technology. The Director of Design Technology provides the technical knowledge and expertise required to streamline operations and allow support teams to function at optimum efficiency.

The Director of Design Technology should be passionate about design and emerging technologies; constantly looking to improve upon or enrich our clients’ experiences through technology.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leadership of the firm’s Design Technology initiative, including development of strategy and implementation
  • Leadership of the design technology team that includes Design Technology Managers, Design Technology Leaders and technology leads in projects
  • Identification and leadership in pursuit of opportunities in emerging technologies
  • Communicating and coaching technical and non-technical audiences on design technology
  • Leadership of BIM/CAD standards and best practices development and implementation
  • Coordinate the deployment of new version releases
  • Develop effective technology training and continuing education procedures to build and maintain user capability
  • Formulate and recommend operational policies and programs that guide the firm in maintaining and improving its competitive position and profitability
  • Some travel is required

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Engineering or equivalent, with 10+ years of experience in design and/or construction practice preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations

  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer, Registered Architect, or Interior Designer is preferred

Software Skills

  • Expert knowledge of, and proven practical background in, Autodesk Revit or similar BIM software.
  • Extensive knowledge of Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of strategies and techniques for capturing value from integrating CADD software with computational or visualization technology

Career Experience

The ideal candidate will have previous experience with:

  • Deep knowledge of current design technologies and curiosity around emerging technologies and how they can be applied to allow designers to work more quickly and design smarter
  • Establishing procedures to optimize workflow and performing daily tasks productively and efficiently
  • Relevant knowledge of design applications for rendering, modeling, computation, analysis and how they work together.
  • Strong interest and/or previous experience in presenting at conferences and events as a thought leader in design technology.
  • Evaluation of technologies and making recommendations on implementation
  • Strong ability to clearly convey and communicate opportunities and implementation plans across the company
  • Experience leading teams/staff across office locations.
  • Understanding sustainable design principles and design practices
  • Minimum 10 years BIM/CAD production experience
  • 5 years of experience in the project-specific, BIM workflow from start to finish.
