Job Description

We seek to hire a Traffic Engineer EIT in our Virginia Beach, VA; Richmond, VA; or Vienna, VA offices who will be responsible for assisting in various aspects of traffic engineering tasks/projects while working under the supervision and guidance of a licensed Engineer (PE). Typical responsibilities include tasks associated with analysis and design involving roadways and intersection improvements. This person will work in stand-alone and multi-discipline design teams supervised by senior engineers and project managers on projects of small to medium scope.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performing various aspects of Traffic Engineering design as directed by a Transportation/Traffic Engineer or Senior Transportation/Traffic Engineer including analysis and design involving roadways and intersection improvements, traffic signal design, ITS design, pavement marking and signage, and maintenance of traffic using Mircostation.
  • Prepare technical reports including traffic analysis results, signal warrant analysis, turn lane warrants and recommended capacity improvements. 
  • Utilize Traffic Modeling software including Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, Sidra, VISSIM, and additional traffic operations to assist in the development of roadway and intersection improvement plans.
  • Coordination and communication with design team members to ensure the Transportation/Traffic design details integrate properly with the work of all other project disciplines.
  • Preparation of marketing and presentation materials as directed
  • Performing Transportation/Traffic services associated with the bidding process, including preparing addenda and amendments and opening and tabulating bids as directed.
  • Performing Transportation/Traffic services associated with the construction phase, including field visits, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings as directed.
  • Complying with quality control policies and procedures
  • Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
  • Researching standards and specifications based on project requirements
  • Working with, responding to, and taking direction from Senior Transportation Engineers, Project Managers and Design Managers

Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform Traffic Engineer tasks as directed
  • Responsible for document organization and clarity
  • Responsible for discipline drawing coordination
  • Traffic engineering and planning studies
  • Traffic related tasks for intersection project, corridor project, and other large scale transportation projects.
  • Completing sections and details produced to a schematic-level of completion by the Transportation/Traffic Engineer
  • Creating schematic-level layout for projects of low to moderate complexity
  • Development of analytical models for traffic analysis and design purposes
  • Participate in developing a model of the site design in GeoPak and/or Civil 3D
  • Adhere to project budget and schedule
  • May require travel

Education

  • Graduate of an ABET-accredited 4-, 5-, or 6-year engineering program in one of the following disciplines:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Civil and Environmental Engineering
    • Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering
    • Civil Engineering Technology
  • Post-graduate degree in Transportation Engineering or Traffic Engineering-related degree may be given additional consideration

Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations

  • Must have earned the designation of EI or EIT in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction or in a state that has reciprocity with Virginia
  • Pursuing Professional Engineer licensure (PE) within 36 months of being hired.
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices and pursuing Envision and/or LEED AP accreditation is desirable
  • Active membership in ITE, VASITE, ASHE, NSPE, ASCE or other related professional organizations is desirable

Software Skills

A Traffic Engineer EIT should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, and information management. 

Working familiarity with design and production software to a point of being able to utilize the software in the development of project documents and interact with other project team members in their use of the software is highly desirable. 

Career Experience

Up to 4 years of specific, post-graduation, transportation/traffic engineering experience that includes experience with analysis and design involving roadways and intersection improvements; utilizing traffic modeling software including Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, Sidra, and VISSIM; signal warrant analysis; turn lane warrants; recommended capacity improvements; traffic signal design; ITS design; pavement marking and signage; and maintenance of traffic plans.

Previous experience with travel demand forecasting and working knowledge of other more complex traffic engineering programs such as VISSIM and Transmodeler may be given additional consideration.
