Job Description

We seek to hire a Structural Engineer Graduate or EIT (Waterfront) in our Virginia Beach, VA office who will be responsible for assisting in various aspects of the waterfront structural engineering portion of a project while working under the supervision and guidance of a licensed Structural Engineer (PE).

General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performing various aspects of structural design as directed by a Structural Engineer or Senior Structural Engineer including conceptual studies, calculations, systems selection and layout for waterfront structure design
  • Preparation of schematic documents, design development documents, and construction documents as directed
  • Coordination and communication with design team members to ensure the structural design details integrate properly with the work of all other project disciplines
  • Preparation of marketing and presentation materials as directed
  • Performing structural services associated with the bidding process, including preparing addenda and amendments as directed
  • Performing structural services associated with the construction phase, including field visits, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings as directed
  • Complying with quality control policies and procedures
  • Learn and implement department and company standards
  • Develop analysis and design skills
  • Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
  • Working with, responding to, and taking direction from Project Managers, Design Managers, Senior Structural Engineers and Structural Engineers
  • Working with a team of architects, engineers, interior designers and landscape architects
  • Individuals assigned to our waterfront engineering division will assist with inspections and collect field data in a marine environment. These duties require independent access to marine vessels (boats).

Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform Structural Engineer or Senior Structural Engineer tasks as directed
  • Responsible for document organization and clarity
  • Responsible for discipline drawing coordination
  • Completing sections and details produced to a schematic-level of completion by the Engineer
  • Creating schematic-level foundation and framing plans for projects of moderate to high complexity
  • Determination of loads acting on the structure, including gravity and lateral loads
  • Development of manual calculations and analytical models for structural analysis and design purposes
  • Participate in developing an accurate, three-dimensional model of the structure with the necessary level of detail using the required Building Information Modeling (BIM) software package, when BIM is a project requirement
  • Develop design options for resolution of system conflicts
  • Assist with marine structural systems calculations and LEED templates
  • Participate in marine structural system selections
  • Participate in marine structural code analysis process
  • Adhere to project budget and schedule
  • Support building structural assignments as required

Education

Graduate of an ABET-accredited 4-, 5-, or 6-year engineering program in one of the following disciplines:

  • Civil Engineering (structural or coastal emphasis)
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering (structural or coastal emphasis)
  • Civil Engineering Technology (structural or coastal emphasis)
  • Architectural engineering (structural Emphasis)
Post-graduate degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering, or Civil Engineering-related degree may be given additional consideration.

Candidate who expect to graduate by June 1, 2020 are eligible to apply for this position.

Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations
  • Completed or be in a position to complete the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and all other state requirements for certification as an EI/EIT is preferred.
  • Pursuing Professional Engineer licensure (PE) within 48 months of being hired.
  • Additional certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged to reflect personal growth in the profession and an ever increasing knowledge base to enhance the design and documentation process
  • Active membership in NSPE, ASCE, NCSEA or other related professional organizations is desirable

Software Skills

A Structural Engineer Graduate or EIT should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, and information management.

Working familiarity with analysis, design, and production software to a point of being able to utilize the software in the development of project documents and interact with other project team members in their use of the software is highly desirable.

Career Experience

  • Up to 4 years of specific, post-graduation, structural engineering experience that includes experience with three of the four major materials (concrete, structural steel, wood, and masonry), development of manual calculations and analytical models for structural analysis and design purposes, development of construction documents (drawings and specifications), coordination with other design team members, and experience in responding to construction phase queries and submittals.
  • Experience and a working knowledge of applicable Building Codes and referenced material-specific standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, and UFC’s
  • Experience with marine or bridge structures, coastal engineering, dredging and/or knowledge of commercial diving will be given additional consideration for individuals who apply for a position in our waterfront engineering division.

Security Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance and US Port access is required.
